Vinayaka Chavithi or Ganesh Chaturthi is a Hindu festival celebrated in the honor of Lord Ganesha. Lord Ganesha is the younger son of God Shiva and Goddess Parvathi. Lord Ganesha is famously known as the Elephant headed God. It is believed that Praying Lord Ganesh prevents /removes any obstacles in our life.
The festival is celebrated for 9 days. On the day 1 all the house holds will worship the clay Idol of Ganesha with various flowers, fruits and leaves which are known to be his favorite. Then special offerings are made to him.
Everyday, for 9 days, a special offering of food will be made for Lord Ganesha. the last day, idol of Ganesha will be immersed in the water.
The first day of festival which is ganesh Chaturthi, In my house hold, we make Undrallu ( steamed Modak/Rice flour balls), Kudumulu( Steamed rice flour discs) and Undralla Payasam ( Rice flour Modak Kheer). Along with we make some savory dishes like lemon rice, Vada, Rice flour Rotis.
Some house holds use wheat flour in place of Rice flour for Modak in Payasam. My Mom in law uses wheat flour where as my Mom makes it with Rice flour. Also for Payasam( Kheer) people use Jaggery( Molasses) or Sugar. So there are many variations. One other variety uses Rice rava to make savory vundrallu. Also another famous dish is stuffed, steamed sweet Undrallu ( Stuffed Modak/Ukadiche Modak).
In this post I Have covered what my family usually makes. I will post more varieties later. You will find the Chavithi specials in this post. Along with it, I will give links to more festive recipes which you can try rest of the festive time.

- 1/2 cup water
- 3 tbsp Rice flour
Vinayaka Chavithi : Step-by-Step Recipes with Photos
- Take Rice flour in a mixing bowl.
- Add couple pinches of salt. Add water gradually to make a soft dough.
- Now take little bit dough and make a ball out of it. I made 5 balls or Vundrallu. If you want you can make more.
- Take little dough and make flat disc shapes. These are Kudumulu. I made 5 Kudumulu.
- Take Idli plates and spread ghee on them. Keep Vundrallu and Kudumulu in them. Now they are ready to be steamed.
- Next preparation is for Payasam.
- Take little dough and make small vundrallu like shown in picture. I made about 40 of them. You can make em in any size but I like small ones. Coz vundrallu by themselves are bland, not sweet. Having small sized ones in the sweet Kheer gives more balanced taste.
- Now I have placed the small vundrallu in a button Idly plate. If you do not have one, you can use regular idli plate. You can place few of em in each dip of Idli plate. They get stuck but comes off easily with out breaking, once steamed.
- Now add 1 cup water to Idli cooker or pressure cooker without whistle and steam all of em for 15 minutes.
- Meanwhile take 1/2 liter milk in a bowl and bring it to boil.
- Add 1/4 cup sugar to the milk.
- Add powdered cardmom to milk ( Elaichi powder).
- After 15 minutes turn off the cooker. Wait few minutes to open the lid.
- Now when you open the lid you could see the vundrallu has changed color.
- Drop the small undrallu into boiling Milk.
- My vundrallu were ready by the time milk came to a boil.If your's aren't stop boiling milk till they are ready.
- Add 3 tbsp rice flour to 1/3 cup water. Mix.
- Add it to the payasam. Rile flour gives thickness to Kheer.
- Keep stirring to prevent rice flour getting to the bottom.
- Add Ghee.
- Boil 5 more minutes. You can see milk getting thicker.
- Boil couple more minutes and turn off. The milk will get thicker as it cools down.
- If you think the milk is thin boil more. If it got too thick add more milk and heat. The right consistency, is like thick n soupy.
- Plate Kudumulu, Vundrallu and Payasam to offer God.
- Along with it I offered some dry fruits and fruits to god, to make up to 5 varieties.
- Serve Payasam.
- Undrallu and kudumulu that arekept for naivedyam, can be added to Payasam later or can be had with a pickle on the side.
- I had left over Rice flour Dough. If it happens, You can make moe undrallu or you can use it to make Rice flour Roti or Crepes( Atlu).
