Majjiga charu (Seasoned Yogurt):

Written By Praveena Gudipati on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 | 11:50 PM

Majjiga Charu is a simple side dish made with Yogurt. This can be called south Indian Raita as it serves the same purpose. To make this dish yogurt is thinned with water and then seasoned with spices. It is usually savored with many rice dishes and with plain rice itself. At home I make it along with Pongal, kichidi. This is not Majjiga Pulusu  (South Indian Kadhi) where vegetables are cooked in yogurt.

South Indian meal is accompanied by several liquid side dishes like Rasam/Charu, Pulusu , Sambar or yogurt dishes. If you like to try em, check out my Tomato Charu, Raw mango Pulusu (Mamidikaya Pacchi pulusu), Cranberry Rasam, Lemon Charu with lentil stock.

Ingredients: (I use US standard measuring; 1cup=8oz=250ml)

  • 1 cup thick Yogurt
  • 1/2 cup or enough water
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric
  • salt

For seasoning

  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • Mustard seeds (Aavalu)
  • Cumin seeds (Jeera)
  • Few Curry leaves
  • 2 redchilli
  • 1 inch ginger grated/crushed
  • 1/4 teaspoon Chilli powder or 2 green chilli paste
  • Few dashes of Hing (Asafoetida/Inguva) ( optional)
  • Finely chopped coriander leaves

Majjiga Charu step wise Recipe

  1. Take thick yogurt in a bowl. Whisk it to make it smooth.
  2. Now add enough water to make it thin. Depending on the yogurt thickness add more or less water.I like it lil thick yet runny.
  3. Add salt to taste, chilli powder or green chilli paste to the yogurt.
  4. Heat oil in a fry pan, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds. When the seeds splutter add curry leaves, broken red chilli, turmeric. Add grated ginger.Turn off the stove and add turmeric, chill powder or green chili paste. You can add hing (Inguva) optionally.

  5. Add the seasoning to the yogurt, stir it and enjoy it with a rice dish.
