Cluster bean/ Guwar bean with Sesame powder curry (Goru Chikkudu nuvvula podi kura)

In Telugu it's called Goru Chikkudu or Gokarakaya. In Hindi Guar or Guwar bean and in English Cluster bean. I want to add a glossary to my blog so it's easy to see what's an ingredient called in different languages. May be soon.

Cluster bean is a fibrous vegetable and usually been consumed as a side dish along with Roti or Rice. The vegetable belongs to legume family like broad beans/Chikkudu kaya. It has a distinctive flavor when cooked so some people does not like it.

This is my favorite recipe with guar bean. It is a simple recipe made with few ingredients and taste so good with Rice, Chapathi and even with Rice flour roti or Jawar roti. The sesame powder adds it a nice flavor and brings it together. It also helps to mask the cluster bean's flavor. My another favorite recipe is cluster bean coconut curry where grated fresh coconut makes it yummy.

Nutrition: The vegetable is highly nutritious. The high fiber content of this vegetable can lower the bad cholesterol. The presence of Iron and calcium along with Vit K makes it good for pregnant women.

I have done this recipe using pressure cooking technique. I love to use my little 1 liter capacity pressure cooker to make several recipes. It's fast, healthy way of cooking veggies. Also you can do things parallel. While the veggies are cooking, you can make rest of the prep.

Four (4)

Cluster bean with Sesame powder curry  step-by-step Recipe with Photos

  1. Rinse the beans in water.
  2. Cluster bean is fibrous so treat them like broad bean (Chikkudukaya). You have to snip both ends and remove fiber that runs along the length.
  3. Then snip the Veggi using hands or chop em.  If they are not very fibrous I like to chop em as we can achieve small pieces.
  4. Now pressure cook vegetables in enough water. Use 1-1.5 cup water. The veggies need to be submerged in water.Add little salt.
  5. Then cook em for 1 whistle and turn off stove.
  6. During this time chop onions into small pieces.
  7. Toast 2 tablespoon sesame seeds with out oil and make a fine powder.
  8. Take a vessel and heat 2 tablespoon oil.season with mustard and jeera seeds.Add curry leaves.
  9. Now add onions. Add turmeric.Sautéed till they turn slight brown.

  10. Now take veggies out of cooker and drain water. You can use this water to make Rasam or use in Soups.
  11. Add the drained cluster beans to the vessel.
  12. Add salt to taste, chilli powder.
  13. Stir to mix everything nicely. Cook for few minutes covered.
  14. Add sesame powder. Stir in. Cook for a minute covered.
  15. Turn off Stove and remove curry into a serving bowl.
  16. Serve it with Rice or Roti
