Tomato Chutney

Written By Praveena Gudipati on Tuesday, September 1, 2015 | 10:11 AM

As a fan of spicy foods, I love chutneys which  are made from fresh veggies. They very well accompany steaming hot  Rice along with ghee😛. You can find various chutney recipes on my blog. Some of these chutneys go very well with Dosa too, like this tomato chutney, red bel pepper chutney and coconut chutney. I have given links to several chutney recipes at the end of this recipe. You can otherwise find em under the category Chutneys/Pickles.

Today as I'm preparing Dosa batter I thought of making tomato chutney on the side instead of my usual Peanut Chutney.

A chutney or Pacchadi as it is called in Telugu usually consists of a vegetable, tamarind, few spices which change based on vegetable. Altogether the cooked/roasted ingredients will be blended into a chutney:-).

The tomato chutney is spicy, tangy and delicious. Perfect with both Rice and Dosa. Serve with some papad on the side, it would be heavenly!

Tomato Chutney Step-by-Step Recipe with Photos

  1. Dry roast all spices on slow flame till they turn brown. Start with Peanuts as they take more time. When Peanuts are half way done add rest of the spices in the order, Coriander seeds, cumin seeds and in the end sesame seeds. When done, keep em aside.

  2. Chop tomatoes into big cubes.Slit and Chop green chillies into big pieces.

  3. Take little oil in the fry pan and fry green chillies. Keep em aside.
  4. In the same pan add tbsp oil and cook tomatoes till soft. Add turmeric. Add tamarind extract to the pan in the end. Turn off stove.Since Tomatoes naturally are lil tangy small piece of Tamarind will be enough. You can taste chutney when it's done and add more if you need.

  5. Let all ingredients cool down.
  6. In a blender/mixie jar blend the dry ingredients to a fine powder first. Then add chillies, blend smooth.Add tomato mixture, salt to taste and Blend smooth.
  7. Take chutney into a serving dish.
  8. Prepare seasoning. Heat 2 tbsp oil into the fry pan.Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves, red chillies to it. Fry em for few seconds till they turn brown. You can add Hing (Asafetida) optionally. Add seasoning to the chutney. Tadka enhances the flavor of chutney.

  9. Stir the seasoning into the chutney. Tomato Chutney is ready to serve.
Tips:
  • You can slit, fry few green chillies in tsp oil and add to chutney or serve on side. Tastes so yummy.
  • You can use the chutney as sandwich spread.
  • Adjust oil and spices according to your taste.
