Sunnundalu (Skinned Blackgram Ladoo)

Written By Praveena Gudipati on Friday, January 26, 2018 | 10:26 AM

Sunnundalu/Minapa Sunnundalu; a delicious, melt in mouth , protein rich dessert that can be made in a jiffy. This is probably one of the simple sweet treat recipe  that I have made. The main ingredient in here is, Minapappu/Urad dal (Skinned Blackgram), so it’s rich in Protein. Three ingredients, minimal cooking and a quick recipe. More over it's healthy. What not to like about it. Even better, you can make the base powder in bulk and store for a while. Make the Ladoos when you want, as many or as few you want. These Ladoos are made with home made Ghee which makes em even better. These Ladoos make a  great platter for Baby shower ceremonies or to share during Diwali as they are very easy to make in bulk.

The circle shape fascinates the kids for some reason. My little one is not much into sweets. He eats only the sweets that are circle shaped, smooth like ladoo:-). So I like to make almond katli, Kaju katli into Ladoo shape instead the regular diamond shape. Also these Ladoos make a great Protein snack in lunch box/snack boxes for kids.

For this Sankranti, as I was planning to make festive delicacies, I wanted to make some sweet that he would eat and also a quick recipe. Then I remembered Sunnundalu. With the power of my Ninja mixer, I made these Ladoo in no time. You can also use a coffee grinder for small quantities.

Makar Sankranthi 2018 delicacies
Total Time :
15 minutes
 Servings:
15 Ladoos, depending on Size

Ingredients (I use US standard measuring; 1cup=8oz=250ml):
  • 1 cup Urad Gota (Skinned black gram whole/Minapa gundlu)
  • 1 cup Sugar/Jaggery (I used Organic sugar)
  • Ghee(Clarified butter) as needed

Sunnundalu Recipe

  • Roast 1 cup Urad Gota on low flame till the color changed to brown. Take roasted gram onto a wide plate to cool off.
  • Blend the Urad Gota With 1 cup Sugar to a smooth powder. You can add Jaggery/Molasses in place of Sugar. Powder the Jaggery and add to powdered Urad gota and pulse mixer few times to mix well. You can also add ‘Sugar in raw’ brand sugar as healthy alternative. I use this brand or Kirklands Organic Sugar usually. If you want easier option, use store bought powdered sugar usually found in Baking isle.
  • You can store this powder in refrigerator for few months to use later.
  • To make Ladoo, Add Ghee to the powder gradually. Mix well with hands. Now make Ladoos. Keep in mind that Ladoo will harden a little,  after some time.
  • Store in an airtight container and enjoy.
