Peanut powder(Palli Podi):

Written By Praveena Gudipati on Sunday, December 7, 2014 | 12:33 AM

Podi is a side dish usually served with Rice or Idli,dosa or any South Indian breakfasts. Its made with a main ingredient grinded with few spices to a powder. We make different powders at home. Peanut powder, Sesame powder(Til or Nuvvula Podi),Karappodi, Coconut powder(Kobbari Podi), roasted bengal gram or Dalia powder(Putnala podi) are few of em.My mom-in-law even makes a powder out of Cucumber seeds(Dosagingala Podi) .It's really yummy but laborious.
Podi are usually nutritious, oil free and are not perishable for months.These are handy on a lazy ,no cooking day to have with Rice. Podulu in making, below pic;

I always carry a jar of Peanut powder at my home. Usually this is eaten with hot rice N ghee. But my son takes it with Idli, Dosa and with many other dishes.My 'Tot' literally eats it out of a bowl :-).Since my 8 yr old is too lazy to dip his food ,I drizzle generous amount of Palli lodi on his Idli ,Dosa etc. Lot of you might be using peanut butter at home. This is no different from that. Peanut butter is made from churning peanuts for longer length of time which bring out the oils and makes it buttery. For some reason my son doesn't like it. No regrets as he loves my palli podi and better that it's home made.

Peanut powder step-by-step Recipe with Photos

  1. Roast the peanuts without oil on a medium flame. Roast em until you see the skins are nicely changed to dark brown.
  2. Keep peanuts aside on a wide plate to cool them down.
  3. In the same pan toast the Jeera (Cumin seeds).
  4. Now grind Peanuts with Jeera, Salt,chili powder,garlic
  5. Keep mixing while grinding to get a even texture.
  6. Final product will be little coarse, not a fine powder or not too coarse.
  7. Take it into a bowl .Use your fingers and mix gently so as to separate any clumps.
  8. Let the powder completely cool down.
  9. Store it in a jar. You can store this for 3 months.
  10. If you grind too long it becomes clumpy.If it happens stop immediately, take it in a bowl and try to do step 7.You can still consume it
  11. Enjoy it with hot rice and ghee or
  12. while making Dosa drizzle it on Dosa, roll it and pack the lunch for kids.On idly, spread some ghee first, then drizzle some Peanut powder on it.

Tips:

  • If you are making eggplant(Vankaya) fry or Bittermelon (Kakarakaya) fry use this powder instead of vellulli karam (Garlic flavored chili powder) or mix vellulli karam with this powder for added flavor.
